Matters of Outer Space: United Nations and World Space Week

World Space Week is a worldwide celebration of science and technology declared by the 54th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 1999. Each year, from October 04-10, World Space Week Association (WSWA) coordinates the global efforts through its network of national coordinators and volunteers around the globe.

The United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) endorses the peaceful use and exploration of space for the benefit of all humanity. The United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is the secretariat to COPUOS and also promotes international cooperation and utilisation of space science and technology for sustainable development.

WSWA is a permanent observer of the UNCOPUOS and reports back the results of World Space Week annually to the United Nations. Most recently, WSWA participated in the 59th session of the UN COPUOS in Vienna. WSWA was represented by the operations manager, Goran Nikolasevic, who read a statement on World Space Week activities in 2015 and the plans for 2016.
