World Space Week in emerging space nations

As we gear up for the 2016 edition of World Space Week, the association is promoting WSW at this year’s International Astronautical Congress (IAC), the world’s premier space event. The 67th IAC is hosted in Mexico, a country that has been a tremendous promoter of World Space Week in recent years.

The Mexican Space Agency or Agencia Espacial Mexicana (AEM), formally established in 2010, has been coordinating World Space Week in the country for the last four years. The AEM chose World Space Week for creating awareness of space, in order to take advantage of the international exposure, UN endorsement, and WSW’s flexible format. From 7000 participants spread across 10 states in 2013, WSW in Mexico grew to almost 112,000 participants across 22 states in 2015. Run on very small budgets, AEM has reached close to 200,000 individuals in all parts of Mexico through World Space Week. In 2015, a total of 172 events were reported, conducted at universities, schools and other institutions.

World Space Week can thus be a great framework for countries and agencies to foster and promote space and its benefits for humanity.
