As you know, the success of space programmes relies greatly on public understanding and support. It is therefore important to regularly communicate to the public about the benefits of space. I wish to propose a means to do so in highly synergistic manner.
In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared 4-10 October annually as World Space Week. The objective is to celebrate internationally the contributions of space to the betterment of the human condition. Since the UN declaration, special public and schools events have been held in over 50 nations each year during World Space Week.
We believe that World Space Week offers unprecedented efficiency and effectiveness in educating the public about space. By synchronizing public and educational programmes under a common name, organizations can achieve greater media coverage and hence a wider audience than we could otherwise. Furthermore, by doing so during the UN-declared World Space Week, we can more easily demonstrate the international nature of space activities and our nation’s space achievements.
For these reasons, I invite you to participate annually in World Space Week. You can do so without added cost in the following way:
- Incorporate the phrase “World Space Week” into space-related public relations and education programmes that are scheduled to occur during the 4-10 October timeframe each year.
- Consider rescheduling currently planned programmes into this timeframe to attract even greater attention.
- Before World Space Week, let us know what programmes you have planned so that we can help publicize your organization and your activities globally.
- Appoint a representative to join me on the national coordinating committee of World Space Week to ensure an effective flow of information about this event.
Since this only proposes the scheduling of planned programmes during World Space Week, the wording of planned materials, and the sharing of information, no additional resources should be required. Yet these simple steps can dramatically increase public awareness and appreciation of space and your organization’s achievements.
